Everything about Harry S Truman Parkway totally explained
Harry S. Truman Parkway is a
freeway in
Savannah, connecting the surrounding Savannah metropolitan area with Downtown Savannah. It was originally dubbed
Casey Canal Parkway, as it paralleled the adjacent waterway. In the early 1970s, coinciding with the death of former president
Harry S. Truman in 1972, the roadway was renamed to honor him.
Truman Parkway isn't a state route, nor is it maintained by the
GDOT: it's one of a handful of county maintained freeways in the Georgia. The Parkway has been opened in several phases: Phase I (President Street south to Victory Drive) and Phase II (Victory Drive south to DeRenne Avenue) opened to traffic by the mid 1990s. Phase III opened to traffic by April of 2004 with Phase IV opening by Summer of 2005.
Harry S. Truman Parkway is one of a handful of county maintained freeways in Georgia. Other county maintained freeways include
Ronald Reagan Parkway, Veterans Parkway (
Southwest Bypass) and a portion of the
